Better than a Tesla Model X? 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC SUV

Mercedes-Benz is in the process of redefining what luxurious motoring is all about with their EQ line of electric vehicles. We first tested an EQS sedan last November and called it the Starship Enterprise. It felt (and sounded) so futuristic for a brand that dates back to 1926.

Electric vehicles make a perfect fit for luxury brands. They are quieter and more effortless to drive and typically (at least for now) cost more than their gas-powered equivalents. Hopping behind the wheel of this 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4MATIC SUV proves that EVs make excellent luxury vehicles.

We already know that Mercedes is renowned for its luxurious vehicles, but this EQS SUV takes it a step further. With its low center of gravity, most of the tradeoffs consumers make for SUVs are wiped away. This EQS SUV feels planted and sure-footed on corners and in traffic. With its electric drive, power is delivered instantaneously, meaning it feels like a much smaller and lighter vehicle when accelerating. With our tester’s 4-wheel steering, this 3-row SUV felt like it could turn circles inside my garage.

Add to all of that the typical Mercedes-Benz luxury accouterment such as their MBUX voice assistant, heated/ventilated/massaging front seats, massive panoramic glass roof, 56-inch MBUX Hyperscreen with passenger controls, Burmester® 3D Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos® enhancement, self-leveling AIRMATIC® air suspension, and so much more.

This Benz even has customizable fragrances that can be added to the HVAC system to keep your ride smelling fresh and clean 24/7, no matter who or what you may be carrying with you, which can be a lot. With seating for up to 7 in the 3 rows of leather seats, or cargo space of up to 74 cubic feet with all the seats folded flat.

Charging the 108.4 kWh battery to full will get you an estimated 285 miles of range, though we consistently saw over 300 miles when we topped off to 100%. Charging happens quickly at DC Fast Chargers too, with up to 200 kW of speed available, the EQS SUV can go from 10-80% in a claimed 31 minutes, getting you and your crew back on the road quickly.
